In Ethiopia, over 7.2 million children are currently unable to attend school because of ongoing conflicts and insecurity. This alarming situation highlights a major crisis in the country’s education system, according to Education Minister Berhanu Nega.
The minister raised the issue during a meeting about education, stressing the urgent need for solutions to address the crisis.
“The conditions of conflict and insecurity harm the minds of children and youth, blocking their future development,” Nega said, according to the public broadcaster Fana.
Arega Kebede, president of the Amhara region in northern Ethiopia, noted that his region is one of the most affected by the lack of educational opportunities due to safety concerns.
While the regional government initially planned to enroll 7 million students for the current academic year, only 2.8 million have been registered so far.
Kebede urged for collective efforts to rebuild the region’s damaged educational institutions.
