Starting from the upcoming academic year, primary school students in Telangana will be introduced to artificial intelligence (AI) as part of their curriculum. In addition to subjects like mathematics, which includes basic arithmetic, time, measurements, and spatial understanding, students will also explore the basics of AI.
The state’s Education department has decided to incorporate AI into the mathematics curriculum. The State Council of Educational Research and Training is working on developing a new curriculum for this purpose.
Under the new curriculum, students in Classes I to V will learn about AI and digital tools like computers. “Class I and II students will be taught the basics of computers, while Class IV and V students will be introduced to AI concepts. The curriculum is still being finalized,” said a senior official from the Education department.
The initiative will begin as a pilot project in five primary schools in each of the 20 districts, including Karimnagar, Vikarabad, Kamareddy, and Warangal, among others.
During a meeting led by Education Secretary Dr. Yogita Rana and School Education Director EV Narasimha Reddy, district collectors agreed to launch the AI learning program in primary schools.
To prepare for the rollout, the Education department will conduct teacher training on April 3 and 4 at MCR HRD in Hyderabad. Trained teachers will then lead AI lessons for students in their schools on April 21 and 22.
In addition to the AI introduction, the department is focusing on improving foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) through AI-based tools. The FLN-AI (AXL) program is already being piloted in 513 primary schools across the state. This program offers personalized, web-based learning, enabling students to learn at their own pace and strengthen their foundational skills in literacy and numeracy.
