Queensland’s education system is set to receive a significant boost with a $2.8 billion funding increase from the federal government. The funding aims to address struggling students and improve the state’s education standards.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Queensland Premier David Crisafulli announced the funding agreement in Canberra as part of the federal government’s Better and Fairer Schools Deal.

Under the agreement, the federal government will increase its contribution to Queensland’s school funding. By 2034, the federal share of school resources in Queensland will rise from 20% to 25%, providing an additional $2.8 billion over the next decade.

Premier Crisafulli called it the largest funding increase for Queensland state schools, saying, “This funding will raise classroom standards across the state and provide students with the support they need to succeed.”

The federal funding will focus on reforms aimed at improving educational standards. These reforms will include personalized support for students, especially those struggling in early education.

“We know that education opens doors of opportunity for every child, and we want to ensure all Australian children get the best education possible,” said Prime Minister Albanese.

The Queensland agreement will link the funding to specific reforms that aim to help students catch up, stay on track, and finish their studies.

As part of the initiative, Year 1 students will undergo testing in phonics and numeracy. This will identify those needing extra help. Small group tutoring and remedial support will be available to assist these students.

The funding will also provide greater access to health professionals who can support student wellbeing. Other measures include improving teacher recruitment and retention, as well as reducing the workload for teachers and school leaders.

The deal includes a goal to achieve the highest ever proportion of students graduating from high school by 2030.
