Starting in September 2025, primary and secondary schools in Beijing, China, will introduce artificial intelligence (AI) courses for students. Each student will receive at least eight hours of AI education each year. This move is part of China’s broader effort to lead in AI innovation on the global stage.
The Beijing Municipal Education Commission confirmed the new initiative. Schools will have the option to offer AI as a separate subject or incorporate it into existing subjects like science and technology. The goal is to equip young students with valuable AI skills at an early stage.
Why is AI Being Taught to Children?
China has long aimed to become a leader in AI, and the competition is now more intense than ever. Recently, the startup DeepSeek released an AI model that competes with those from major U.S. tech companies, while using fewer resources. To maintain its lead, China is focusing on boosting AI education across the country.
Education Minister Huai Jinpeng recently highlighted AI’s potential as a transformative tool. Speaking at the National People’s Congress, he emphasized the importance of AI in education. He also announced plans for a 2025 white paper, which will outline China’s AI education strategy.
What Will Students Learn?
The AI courses will be designed for students of all ages. Younger children will start with the basics, while older students will explore more complex topics.
The curriculum is expected to cover areas such as:
AI Fundamentals: Understanding how AI works and its practical uses.
Machine Learning Basics: Learning how computers recognize patterns and make decisions.
Coding and Robotics: Hands-on experience with AI-powered programming tools.
Ethical AI: Exploring AI biases and how to develop AI responsibly.
AI in Daily Life: Learning how AI is used in industries like healthcare, finance, and entertainment.
