Kide Science, in partnership with Sesame Workshop and Programa Adopte un Talento (PAUTA), has launched a program to enhance access to STEM education for preschool children in underserved communities across Mexico. The initiative is supported by funding from Business Finland and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland and will focus on providing STEM resources and teacher training to 20 to 30 public schools.
The project seeks to address the ongoing challenges of educational equity in STEM, particularly in Latin America, where international assessments such as the 2022 PISA results show persistent gaps in mathematics, reading, and science. Although there were some improvements before the pandemic, progress has stalled or even reversed in recent years.
As part of the initiative, Kide Science will create lesson plans linked to *Sesame Street Mecha Builders*, an animated series that features Sesame Street characters solving problems with STEM concepts. These resources will be available in both Spanish and English, ensuring accessibility for a wider audience. The program will also offer teacher training to help educators improve STEM instruction and promote diversity and inclusion in these fields.
The initiative will work closely with state-level Secretariats of Education in Mexico to implement the program. Teachers will receive evidence-based tools to enhance their STEM teaching methods, aiming to close educational gaps and spark interest in STEM subjects among girls and other underrepresented groups.
Sari Hurme-Mehtälä, co-founder and managing director of Kide Science, highlighted the importance of the program, saying, “The support of our esteemed project and funding partners demonstrates the global need for promoting equity in STEM. Together, we are ensuring that all students, regardless of their background, have the opportunity to explore and excel in these fields.”
This program also paves the way for potential expansion to other countries, aligning with Kide Science’s broader mission to make STEM education accessible worldwide.
