The Garfield Re-2 School District has made significant strides in expanding its early childhood education offerings, responding to the rising demand for quality preschool options in the community. The expansion is aimed at providing more opportunities for local families and ensuring that every child has access to an early education.
Emily Kielmeyer, the district’s Early Childhood Coordinator, emphasized the importance of getting children into preschool at a young age. “An early start is a strong start,” she said. “We want to ensure that any family interested in early education can have that opportunity.”
The district has expanded its preschool capacity by adding new classrooms across multiple locations. At Elk Creek Elementary, two new preschool rooms and a toddler room have opened. Similarly, Wamsley Elementary now hosts four new preschool rooms and a toddler room. Additionally, a new preschool classroom has been added at Colorado Mountain College’s Rifle campus.
The expansion at Wamsley Elementary is particularly notable, as it includes the construction of two new buildings to accommodate over 40 new preschool students. This development was made possible through an $800,000 Colorado Employer-Based Childcare Grant and a Colorado Capacity Building Grant, which helped fund furniture, fixtures, and educational materials.
In the past, Garfield Re-2 had long waitlists for its preschool programs and did not offer services for children under three years old. The new classrooms at Elk Creek and Wamsley Elementary will help ease this demand and create more spaces for young learners.
In partnership with Colorado Mountain College (CMC), the district is also offering more flexible preschool options. The new classroom at CMC’s Rifle campus provides half-day sessions, giving families the choice of either morning or afternoon classes. “We know that some families prefer a half-day schedule, and this new classroom will provide that flexibility,” Kielmeyer explained.
Despite facing staffing challenges, the district remains dedicated to maintaining high-quality preschool programs. Kielmeyer credits the commitment of preschool staff and directors for making the expansion successful. “Our teams work together to ensure every classroom upholds the same high standards, even during staffing shortages,” she said. “Our directors, assistant directors, and teachers collaborate to ensure our students are well cared for and engaged.”
This expansion reflects Garfield Re-2’s commitment to offering valuable educational opportunities for the youngest members of the community, helping to lay the foundation for their future success
