B’nai Israel Congregation in Rockville is committed to its preschool program at the Schilit Nursery School, which has served multiple generations of families. The nursery school provides educational programs for children aged two to five, offering both full-day and half-day options tailored to meet the needs of parents. It introduces children to Jewish texts while helping parents connect with the synagogue community.
The preschool focuses on preparing children for kindergarten through a child-centered approach. According to Rabbi Michael Safra, the senior rabbi at B’nai Israel, the program includes purposeful activities that offer a rich Jewish foundation.
“Children can be themselves, but everything they do in the classroom has a purpose, promoting growth and educational opportunities,” Safra explained.
The program also emphasizes building early relationships between young children and synagogue staff. This is crucial for fostering a sense of Jewish identity and belonging within the community.
Rabbi Safra praised the B’nai Israel teachers and educational directors, noting their adaptability in meeting the individual needs of children in a changing educational environment.
“Our teachers feel valued in our community, and many stay with us for a long time because they truly care about the children,” Safra said.
He highlighted the contributions of Early Childhood Director Rebeca Ravski, Nursery School Assistant Director Esme Jacobson, and Chief Educational Officer Rabbi Cheryl Stone as essential to the preschool’s success.
Safra emphasized that the collaboration among staff creates a seamless educational experience, integrating preschoolers into the larger synagogue community.
“Many families in our preschool find their synagogue home at B’nai Israel,” he added.
