ABU DHABI, 29th October 2024 (WAM) – Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Week officially began today under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes’ Affairs and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority (ECA).

The event kicked off with the ECD Research Convening, a platform aimed at inspiring researchers and fostering collaboration in early childhood development (ECD). Over 90 researchers from the UAE, Arab region, and Africa gathered to address challenges and explore opportunities in the field.

Sana Mohammad Suhail, Director General of the ECA, emphasized Abu Dhabi’s leadership in empowering young children over the past five years. She noted that innovative approaches have been key to these efforts, achieved through strong partnerships.

“Research and knowledge production have been crucial to our mission,” Suhail said. “While researchers have some excellent support, they also face significant barriers, leading to a lack of published studies. Only 3% of research in this field comes from our region.”

Suhail also spoke about the WED Movement, which brings together global experts to create solutions that enhance children’s lives and set new trends in early childhood development. “Our goal is to ensure every child has the best start in life, recognizing the challenges they face. We are committed to supporting researchers and institutions aligned with our mission to foster knowledge that influences decision-making worldwide,” she added.

The first day also featured ECD Innovation Day, where more than 30 experts discussed themes like building supportive ecosystems and spotlighting emerging technologies. Badr Al-Olama, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), stated, “Innovation is key to shaping future economies. By focusing on local innovation and global impact in early childhood development, Abu Dhabi is preparing young minds to thrive as global citizens.”

Dr. Yousef Alhammadi, Executive Director of Knowledge and Impact at the ECA, highlighted the importance of collaborative networks among startups, investors, and academia. “Emerging technologies such as AI and virtual reality are transforming education and healthcare, providing new possibilities for early childhood development,” he said.

Ian Hathaway, Co-Founder and General Partner of Far Out Ventures, delivered a keynote address on the importance of innovation ecosystems. He stressed that collaboration is essential for fostering innovation in areas like early childhood development, where thoughtful solutions can greatly impact children and families.

During ECD Innovation Day, the ECA unveiled three new reports aimed at addressing key challenges in ECD. Suhail presented the 2024 Early Childhood Development Megatrends Report, which outlines seven global trends affecting the field. She explained that these trends underscore the need for a holistic approach to meet the needs of children and families.

The report calls for an integrated policy framework to tackle interconnected challenges, as well as flexible education systems and support programs for parents. It also emphasizes ethical guidelines for technology use and the importance of community resilience.

The WED Urban Thrive Report, created in partnership with Aldar Properties, focuses on the needs of young children in urban settings. It offers a framework for cities like Abu Dhabi to prioritize the well-being of their youngest residents.

The WED Movement Innovation and Outputs Report highlights challenges such as limited access to outdoor play and the need for stronger ties to cultural heritage. It shares insights on how the WED initiative aims to create a systemic impact on young children through child-centered innovation.
