Preschoolers from Northamptonshire Charity Foster Community Kindness

A charity-run preschool in Long Buckby, Northamptonshire, has launched a series of community-focused activities aimed at enhancing children’s learning and confidence. For over two years, the preschool, managed by a committee of volunteer trustees, has provided a play-based environment for children to grow and develop.

Lucy Macleod, the manager of Long Buckby Preschool, has introduced various “acts of kindness” activities for children to engage in alongside parents and staff. These activities complement the preschool’s regular programs, which include singing, arts and crafts, outdoor play, and sessions on reading and math.

“It’s about building their learning and confidence,” Lucy said. “We want happy, confident, and capable children as they prepare for school. It’s important that they develop resilience and a positive outlook on life.”

With more than two decades of experience in childcare, Lucy is passionate about providing children with opportunities that enhance their learning. “Our job is to create activities that spark their curiosity,” she shared.

Long Buckby Preschool, staffed by around eight members—many of whom are parents—has adopted “The Curiosity Approach,” a teaching method that emphasizes curiosity, creativity, and holistic development for young children. Lucy explained, “It’s a natural-based learning approach. We focus on children learning through play and using familiar objects that they would find at home. We are very family-oriented, and our parents have a voice in what we do.”

Recently, Lucy aimed to offer children “something a bit different.” She and her team reached out to the community to organize activities that would further develop children’s skills. “It has been lovely,” Lucy noted.

On September 13, the children participated in the new ‘acts of kindness’ sessions by walking around the village and placing “positive notes” with uplifting quotes to encourage positivity within the community.

On October 4, the preschool hosted a flower-arranging workshop led by Jo Grey, a local florist with over 25 years of experience. After the workshop, children took flowers into the community to deliver to residents.

Due to the positive response from the community, Lucy expressed a desire to continue these local events. Future plans include a special art session that Lucy described as “magical.”

This month, the preschool also launched a new ‘Muddy Monday’ session, where children can explore and engage in outdoor forest school activities.
