DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — The First Steps program in Dorchester County is making a significant impact by supporting early childhood education for families and children from birth to age five. This initiative aims to ensure that children are prepared for school success, addressing a crucial need in the Lowcountry.
Crystal Campbell, the Executive Director of First Steps and a former educator, feels a deep connection to the program. “When I was offered the role of executive director, it felt like coming full circle,” Campbell said. “I helped write the very first grant for Dorchester County in 1999 and have been involved with First Steps in various capacities since then.”
A key focus of Dorchester County First Steps is providing childcare support to families in need. The program offers childcare scholarships, which help parents who qualify for financial assistance. “We aim to support families who lack the resources for proper childcare,” Campbell explained. “Through our scholarships, parents can enroll their children in centers where we monitor and support their progress throughout the year. This funding comes from the Department of Social Services.”
Campbell has witnessed firsthand the positive effects of the program on working parents and their children. “We impacted 90 children last year,” she said. “They received large book bags filled with kindergarten resources. We worked closely with them, whether at home, school, or the park, to ensure they were well-prepared. The feedback has been outstanding.”
Campbell is optimistic about the program’s future and its continued success. “Reports from the start of the school year have been incredibly positive,” she noted. “Children who participated in our program showed remarkable progress over the summer. They entered school with confidence, already familiar with the environment and excited to be there.”
Looking ahead, First Steps is gearing up for one of its major annual events, Mother Read Father Read, which aims to further support early literacy and parental involvement.
