In a push to further reduce drowning rates among children under five, a new series of interactive water safety education shows will debut in early education centers across Australia this spring. This initiative is part of the ongoing partnership between Kids Alive – Do the Five and Ready Set Dance (RSD).
With over 250 Ready Set Dance locations in both metropolitan and rural areas, the program aims to effectively deliver essential water safety messages through engaging song and dance performances.
In the past year, 15 children aged 0-4 drowned, accounting for 5% of all drowning incidents. While this figure marks a 6% decrease from the previous year and a 25% reduction from the 10-year average, Kids Alive is committed to achieving a zero-drowning rate for this age group.
Emma Lawrence, Managing Director of Kids Alive, noted, “The ongoing decline in drowning rates among young children shows the positive impact of public awareness, education, and advocacy. However, this age group remains at high risk, so it’s vital to continue and expand these efforts to maintain the progress made over the past two decades.”
Lawrence emphasized the importance of the collaboration with Ready Set Dance, stating, “Our partnership is crucial in ensuring more children receive water safety education in a fun, engaging, and memorable way. Repetition is key to learning.”
Belinda Agostino, Chief Creative Director of Ready Set Dance, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting the innovative mix of dance and safety education. “We are excited to be part of this vital initiative. Our interactive shows will integrate water safety lessons into children’s lives, combining the joy of dance with crucial life-saving skills.”
Starting September 1, Ready Set Dance will host these Interactive Water Safety Shows at local early education centers and community groups throughout the month. The shows will be conducted by studios that have received specialized training from Kids Alive to effectively communicate safety messages.
The program will address critical water safety issues, emphasizing the need for constant adult supervision and providing essential safety tips for home, pool, farm, and beach environments. Ready Set Dance’s commitment, along with their partnership with Kids Alive, aims to deliver these life-saving messages to the most vulnerable age group.
Educators and community groups are encouraged to arrange an Interactive Water Safety Show through their local Ready Set Dance studio to participate in this important initiative.
