NORMAN, Okla. — The University of Oklahoma’s child care center is expanding its capacity to better support student parents. “This expansion will ease the burden on parents with very young children,” said Yuenjung Joo, director of the Institute of Child Development at OU.
The center, which has served the campus community for nearly a century, faces high demand for its services. To meet this need, it is adding more classrooms. “Previously, we had just one mixed-age classroom, but now we have five classrooms catering to children from 6 weeks to 4 years old,” Joo explained.
The expanded facility allows student parents to attend classes knowing their children are well cared for. It also provides future educators with valuable hands-on experience. “This will offer practicum students a better chance to observe various age groups and deepen their understanding of child development,” Joo added.
Additionally, the institute offers federal grants to assist qualifying students with child care subsidies. “Eligibility is based on income, class level, and available spots,” said Jen Murphy, curriculum and instruction specialist.
Currently, the center has space only for 4-year-olds this semester but encourages interested students and staff to apply and join the waitlist.
