In just eight months since its relaunch, the Saugus Union School District’s preschool program is showing promising signs of growth, according to district officials at a recent meeting.
The discussion began with a quote from Virginia Rep. Abigail Spanberger: “Early childhood is one of the strongest investments we can make in the long-term success of our students and the long-term economic strength of our communities.”
Michelle Barries, assistant superintendent of student services, emphasized the importance of this perspective, stating, “We believe in the investment of early childhood.” Currently, 48 students are enrolled in four general education classes at Bouquet Canyon Early Learning Academy. Two of these classes meet five days a week for three hours each morning, while the other two classes are held three days a week for two hours each afternoon.
The program also offers special education services, including speech therapy, occupational therapy, and adaptive physical education.
The cost for the five-day-a-week class is approximately $4,320 per year, while the three-day-a-week class costs around $1,744 per year. Monthly, this breaks down to about $432 for the full-time program and $174 for the part-time program. Barries noted that these fees are competitive with other preschool programs in the Santa Clarita Valley, although she could not comment on the specifics of services provided elsewhere.
Superintendent Colleen Hawkins highlighted that incorporating special education services aligns with the district’s vision for the Early Learning Center. “Special day class students have access to typical peers,” Hawkins said. “This allows us to meet compliance requirements and better serve both groups of students. We’re addressing a community need.”
With all classes filled, there are currently more than 50 people on the waitlist. Barries noted that while enrollment fluctuates, the significant number of waitlisted families indicates a strong demand for the program. “There is interest,” she said. “As openings arise, we contact the next person on the waitlist.”
Additionally, Hawkins mentioned that the district is collaborating with College of the Canyons on internship opportunities.
The program is projected to generate approximately $145,500 in revenue annually. After accounting for expenses—including salaries, benefits, supplies, and indirect costs—amounting to about $134,650, the district expects to net around $10,000 each year. These surplus funds are reserved for preschool-related purchases, such as special tricycles.
For larger capital projects, like roofing, the district utilizes a separate fund designated for such expenses, as explained by Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Nick Heinlein.
