Last month, students at Acomb First School participated in a series of educational trips to local sites, including Kielder, Cragside National Trust, and Hextol Tans. These visits aimed to enhance learning experiences and connect classroom lessons with real-world jobs.
The Chestnut class focused on renewable energy, science, and geography. Meanwhile, the Maple class explored food production and healthy eating. To demonstrate their newfound knowledge, the students presented a showcase featuring a rap performance and a restaurant simulation.
Year 2 student Sam remarked, “I loved serving food to the parents at the showcase. Working with Hextol and Hjem taught us how to cook.”
Raven added, “Hextol and Hjem showed us excellent leadership skills in cooking. Aly also taught us how to set a table properly and explained how the restaurant operates.”
Skye from Chestnut class said, “I had a lot of fun and learned a lot. My favorite part was presenting at the showcase.”
Marnie noted, “The project was very interesting. We learned about energy and its importance for the planet. Performing the rap was my favorite part. I also enjoyed learning about careers in the wind turbine workshop and the use of green skills.”
Hugo commented, “I found learning about careers at Cragside and Kielder fascinating. I was surprised by the water release mechanism as it didn’t work the way I expected.”
Northumbrian Water staff praised the students: “We were impressed by the class’s engagement and understanding. The rap was fantastic. Laura should be proud of the event, as it required significant effort and dedication. We hope Kielder can be part of future projects.”
Connor from Northumberland College also praised the students: “The kids were brilliant—confident and articulate. They are a credit to the school. Thank you for involving me in this experience.”
