SINGAPORE – A former pre-school teacher faced charges on July 31 for allegedly kicking a four-year-old girl’s right shin shortly before noon on April 2.

Details about the 56-year-old woman and her former workplace are omitted from court documents.

The case gained attention in June when The Straits Times reported that a pre-school teacher was suspended after an investigation revealed she allegedly kicked the girl to make her sit properly.

On June 5, a spokesperson for the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) informed The Straits Times that they were alerted to the incident on April 3.

Following its investigations, the childcare center suspended the teacher from her duties. ECDA also stated that regulatory action was taken against both the pre-school operator and the teacher involved, though specific details were not disclosed.

The ECDA spokesperson added, “The errant teacher subsequently resigned and has not been working in the pre-school sector since.” The case has been adjourned to September 10.

If convicted of ill-treating a child, the woman could face up to eight years in jail and a fine of up to $8,000.
