South Bristol’s Largest Nursery and Preschool Receives Glowing Ofsted Review

Staff and children at one of South Bristol’s largest nurseries are celebrating after receiving a ‘Good’ rating from Ofsted.

The Little Big Steps nursery, which serves nearly 100 children and is located in The Park Centre in Knowle West, has been praised for its high standards. Situated in one of Bristol’s most socio-economically challenged areas, the nursery caters to children from infancy to age four. Ofsted inspectors noted that all children, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, make significant progress.

The report highlighted strong parental involvement, especially since the nursery was acquired by Partou, a Dutch company that has become the fifth-largest day nursery group in Britain. Inspectors commended the nursery’s ‘caring and friendly staff,’ who build strong bonds with the children.

Ofsted inspector Rachel Howell emphasized that parents trust the staff, appreciating their dedication, enthusiasm, and support. Howell noted that staff effectively communicate with parents through discussions, meetings, and the nursery’s new online app. “Parents feel well informed,” she said.

Each child’s key person conducts observations and assessments to monitor developmental progress. If a child is falling behind, staff promptly coordinate with parents and the nursery’s special educational needs coordinator to provide additional support.

The report also praised the management team for completing advanced child protection training, ensuring robust practices. “Staff know how to address concerns about children or colleagues promptly to secure necessary support and safety,” Howell said.

The management team’s cohesive leadership and ongoing review processes were highlighted as key factors in maintaining high standards. They ensure thorough monitoring and mentoring of all staff, including newcomers and agency staff.

This inspection is the first since the Covid pandemic and the nursery’s transition from Abbeywood Tots Community Nursery to Partou.

Nursery Manager Linda Smith expressed pride in the team’s work. “The Ofsted report validates our approach and commitment to providing the best nursery experience for children and their families,” she said. “While we welcome this positive feedback, we are committed to continuous improvement and maintaining high standards.”

Partou, which operates 106 nurseries across the UK, also praised the report. Managing Director Samantha Rhodes expressed satisfaction with the recognition of the team’s efforts and the additional resources provided for staff training. “Ensuring our team members have the necessary skills and knowledge is a priority for Partou, and we are delighted that Ofsted has acknowledged this,” Rhodes said.
