Kerala is preparing to launch a groundbreaking initiative aimed at supporting parents throughout their children’s educational journey. This initiative involves the creation of a series of handbooks tailored for parents of students at different stages of schooling, marking a first-of-its-kind effort in India.

Developed by the General Education Department (GED), the ‘Handbook for Parents’ is scheduled for release by the end of this month. This handbook series aims to empower parents with essential knowledge and tools to navigate their children’s physical, mental, and emotional development.

Dr. Jayaprakash RK, Director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), highlighted the importance of a collaborative educational process involving students, teachers, and parents. He emphasized that parents play a crucial role in bridging the gap between home and school, providing stability and encouragement necessary for academic success.

General Education Minister V Sivankutty explained that four distinct handbooks will cater to parents of children at pre-primary, lower primary-upper primary, high school, and higher secondary levels. These handbooks will cover various aspects of children’s development and focus on strengthening the student-teacher-parent relationship.

Dr. Jayaprakash emphasized the holistic approach of these handbooks, which not only address academic concerns but also tackle contemporary issues such as drug abuse, online addiction, cybercrime, and the importance of extracurricular activities. The aim is to guide parents in fostering a balanced and healthy lifestyle for their children.

These handbooks are the result of a collaborative effort involving educators, healthcare professionals, and specialists in child development. They are designed to provide practical advice and support to parents as they navigate the challenges and triumphs of parenting.

Dr. Supriya AR, State Project Director of Samagra Shiksha Kerala, highlighted that these initiatives aim to go beyond academic learning, focusing on broader aspects of life to nurture well-rounded individuals who are adaptable and empathetic.

In summary, Kerala’s initiative with these handbooks reflects a proactive approach towards empowering parents and ensuring comprehensive support for children’s holistic development.
