Flinders University is gearing up for South Australia’s upcoming 2026 launch of preschools for three-year-olds, addressing teacher shortages with new teaching degrees. The university is introducing specialized programs aimed at equipping early childhood educators for roles in childcare centers, kindergartens, and preschools.
Supported by scholarships offering up to $25,000 in financial aid from the South Australian government, Flinders University has developed a cutting-edge postgraduate degree focused on early childhood education from birth to five years. This program, set to commence in Semester 2 of this year, is currently open for applications.
In response to recommendations from the Royal Commission into Early Childhood Education and Care, the new Master of Teaching (Birth to 5) will prepare students to effectively plan, implement, and advocate for transformative teaching and learning experiences for young children. Emphasis will be placed on applying inclusive policies and practices that accommodate social and individual differences, ensuring supportive learning environments for all children.
Rachael Hedger, Course Coordinator and Senior Lecturer in Early Childhood, highlights Flinders University’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities with the introduction of a three-year Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (Birth to 5) starting in 2025. This program includes a one-year credit for students holding a Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care, making them eligible for the government’s financial support initiative.
Additionally, Flinders will offer a Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood Education (Birth-to-five), tailored for primary and secondary school teachers seeking to transition into early childhood education. This program will be available online to accommodate the professional development needs of working educators.
These new educational pathways complement Flinders University’s investment in a specialized Early Childhood teaching facility at Bedford Park, providing students with practical learning opportunities in a real-world setting.
