Children Embrace Various Extracurricular Activities for International Children’s Day

As June 1 approaches, marking International Children’s Day, children throughout China are actively engaging in a spectrum of vibrant extracurricular activities to expand their knowledge and horizons.

This proactive involvement is rooted in the belief that valuable lessons emerge from both labor and daily experiences. Encouraging children to embrace a strong work ethic, foster good habits, and enhance their skills from an early age contributes significantly to their holistic learning.

On a recent Wednesday, the Ayi Choir from Wenshui Town Central School in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, situated in Southwest China’s Sichuan Province, embarked on a noteworthy excursion to the honor hall of the training bureau under the General Administration of Sport of China in Beijing. Here, they delved into China’s sports history and celebrated its achievements in sports development.

Simultaneously, students from Tuerhong Township Central Primary School in Altay Prefecture, located in Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, participated in an “open day” event at the Tuerhong Border Police Station under the Altay Border Management Detachment. The event featured equipment displays, a police history museum tour, and traffic safety classes, providing students with insights into the daily duties of police officers. The officers, in turn, encouraged the students to excel academically and aspire to be future pillars of the nation.

Meanwhile, on Monday, Youyang County Experimental Primary School in Southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality orchestrated a two-day study tour themed “Practice Makes Perfect, Labor Shapes the Future” for its fourth-grade students. Transforming their classroom setting to outdoor fields, the students engaged in practical learning, merged knowledge with hands-on experience, indulged in playful learning, and celebrated a distinctive Children’s Day in advance.

During this immersive experience, experts guided the students through the rice cultivation process, covering seedling cultivation, transplanting, disease prevention, pest control, and eventual harvest. Additionally, students gained insights into China’s agricultural advancements and participated in engaging activities such as crafting scarecrows, painting straw hats, embarking on treasure hunts, and relishing a starlit campfire.

In Ordos City, situated in North China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, students at Kangbashi Experimental Primary School embraced a fun competition focused on labor skills. This event aimed to equip students with essential life skills, fostering self-reliance as part of their Children’s Day celebration.

Early in the morning on May 24, in Wuhan’s Yuanjia Community, located in Central China’s Hubei Province, children actively participated in environmental cleanup activities, including picking up cigarette butts and tidying up litter. Collaborating with Shenyang Road Primary School, the community organized special initiatives to familiarize children with environmental stewardship. Led by their teachers, the children became enthusiastic “guardians” of their environment, earning admiration from passersby for their efforts.

Notably, many nations worldwide commemorate Children’s Day on June 1, originally established to safeguard children’s rights to survival, health, and education, enhance their quality of life, and combat child abuse and neglect.

China’s inaugural Children’s Day dates back to April 4, 1932. Following the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the government designated June 1 as “International Children’s Day,” replacing the former “April 4 Children’s Day.”
