RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A potential change in Virginia’s early childcare education system could impact thousands of families, prompting the launch of the “Gotta Have Childcare” campaign.
Starting on Monday, Dec. 9, the campaign is calling for increased and sustained funding for early childhood education in the state. While advocates acknowledge Virginia’s progress in recent years, they warn that a key source of funding may soon end, jeopardizing the state’s advancements.
Organizers say that temporary funding, which has supported early childcare initiatives, is set to expire in the coming months. Without additional funding, tens of thousands of children and families could lose access to essential childcare services. As of last year, more than 10,000 children were already on waiting lists for childcare in Virginia.
To address the issue, the “Gotta Have Childcare” campaign will officially launch at 12:30 p.m. on Monday at the Virginia General Assembly Building, located at 201 N 9th Street, in the House Briefing Room. The event will feature speeches from key political figures, including Sen. Louise Lucas (R) and Del. Carrie Coyner (R), as well as concerned parents.
Since 2021, the Virginia Department of Education has been responsible for overseeing early childhood education programs. These programs are designed to help prepare young children for kindergarten and beyond.
Advocates argue that continued investment is crucial to ensure the state’s progress in providing quality early education for all Virginia children.
