The Scottish Government has launched a new £3 million initiative to support school breakfast clubs, aiming to help children from disadvantaged backgrounds reach their full learning potential.
The Bright Start Breakfasts scheme, announced in the recent Budget, will provide free breakfasts to thousands of primary school children. The initiative also aims to support working parents by offering childcare, making it easier for them to get to work in the morning.
Education Secretary Jenny Gilruth highlighted that the scheme is a key part of the Scottish Government’s efforts to tackle child poverty. She emphasized the importance of a healthy breakfast, particularly for children facing financial challenges. “These breakfast clubs will help children start their day right, setting them up to succeed in school,” she said.
The scheme builds on other family support measures in the latest Budget, including the removal of the two-child cap, expanded free school meals, and additional grants for school clothing and education maintenance.
Finance Secretary Shona Robison also welcomed the new program, stating that it will provide greater support to working parents while giving children a better start to their day.
