USAID has announced a new partnership with UNICEF to promote inclusive education for Venezuelan migrant and refugee children in Peru. This announcement follows a visit to a school by USAID Administrator Samantha Power.
Peru hosts the second-largest Venezuelan migrant and refugee population in the world, with 1.6 million people seeking safety and better opportunities. USAID continues to work closely with the Government of Peru, supporting its efforts to host and assist Venezuelan migrants as they build new lives in their communities.
With a $2 million investment, the project aims to provide access to education and help secure legal status for migrant children, adolescents, and their families in Peru. UNICEF will lead the project, working in partnership with HIAS and the Government of Peru.
The initiative will focus on keeping students in school and offering quality education while also assisting with the legal status of migrant children and their guardians. By ensuring enrollment and retention in the formal education system, the project helps migrants secure the status they need to stay, settle, and integrate into their new community. This, in turn, opens up opportunities for them to contribute to Peru’s economy.
USAID and the U.S. government recognize the importance of each person’s contribution to society and are committed to formally including Venezuelan migrants in Peruvian life. Through partnerships across various sectors, USAID continues to support refugees and migrants, helping them thrive in their new homes and discouraging dangerous onward migration.
