Exclusive Early School Admission for Exceptionally Gifted Preschoolers

by Beatrice

Under Colorado State Law (22-20-103), a select group of highly gifted preschoolers may qualify for Early Access to kindergarten or first grade. This program is specifically tailored for children with exceptional academic needs that require significant acceleration.

Eligibility Requirements for Early Access (August 2025):

Age: Four-year-olds can apply for kindergarten, and five-year-olds can apply for first grade.

Gifted Criteria: Applicants must score in the top 0.1 percentile—approximately 1 in 1,000 children meet this threshold.

Academic and Developmental Criteria:

1. Academic performance at the 97th percentile or higher.

2. A cognitive abilities (IQ) score of 140 or above.

3. Achievement test scores in the 97th percentile or higher.

4. Social, emotional, and fine motor readiness for school.

This program is designed solely for children who demonstrate a clear need for academic acceleration. It is not recommended for the majority of gifted children aged four or five.

How to Begin the Application Process

Families interested in Early Access should first consult their child’s preschool or early childhood provider to evaluate whether the child might qualify. If recommended, families can proceed with the following steps:

1. Submit a letter of intent.

2. Pay a $30 processing fee.

3. Send materials to:
