CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) – A new initiative in Cape Girardeau aims to prepare students for careers in early childhood education through a hands-on apprenticeship program.

The program is a partnership between the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center (CTC) and Cape Public Schools. The CTC will provide classroom instruction, while Cape Public Schools will offer practical, on-the-job training.

Participants will complete a 2,000-hour apprenticeship, after which they will earn an Early Childhood Education certificate from the Department of Labor.

Taylor Muench, the first student to join the program, highlighted the value of blending hands-on experience with traditional learning.

“It’s helped me because I get to do hands-on work. Not only am I doing all the bookwork through school, but I also get to be in an actual classroom. I work with kids, assist the teacher, and just have fun with the students,” she said.

The program is open to students aged 16 to 24 and is officially registered with the Department of Labor.
