Angelina’s Day Care LTD in Colchester has received an “inadequate” rating from Ofsted in its first-ever inspection report, published on October 29. The nursery, located at Asset House on East Street, was evaluated on September 2.
The report highlights significant issues, noting that the nursery did not effectively follow procedures to ensure children’s safety. It criticized the leadership and management for failing to guarantee the children’s welfare.
Inspectors found instances where children were left unsupervised with visitors. Additionally, the nursery lacks a stimulating and challenging curriculum tailored to the children’s needs. Those who thrive in outdoor learning do not have access to an engaging outdoor program.
Despite these concerns, the report states that children appear settled and comfortable at the nursery. New arrivals express excitement as they explore the available toys. Once acclimated, children seem happy and content, and staff are described as kind and caring.
Weekly staff meetings are held to discuss planning and review children’s needs. However, the report indicates that supervision of staff is insufficient, leading to a lack of confidence in their teaching abilities. The current curriculum is deemed “not ambitious or effective.”
On a positive note, there is a strong culture of safeguarding that prioritizes the interests of the children.
Angelina’s Day Care, which opened earlier this year, provides care for babies and preschool-aged children, including funded education for two, three, and four-year-olds. The facility has 90 spaces and operates Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. year-round. It employs four staff members, with two holding appropriate early years qualifications at level three.
The nursery has not yet responded to requests for comment.
