Early Learning Indiana (ELI) has announced a new partnership with LENA, a prominent nonprofit organization focused on research and programming for early language development. This collaboration is backed by a $3.2 million grant from Lilly Endowment, aimed at increasing verbal interactions between children and their teachers through the LENA Grow program.
Research shows that conversations between children and their caregivers play a crucial role in developing early language and literacy skills. These interactions stimulate the brain’s language center, which is essential for learning. Recent data from the Indiana Department of Education reveals that nearly 1 in 5 third graders in Indiana do not have the foundational reading skills they need.
The LENA Grow program employs a “talk pedometer” to track how often children engage in conversations with their teachers. This tool provides educators with valuable insights into their learning environments. Additionally, the program offers professional development for teachers to enhance their skills in fostering child-adult interactions.
“By maximizing this time, we can build the foundational skills that empower children to succeed in kindergarten and beyond,” said Maureen Weber, president and CEO of ELI.
ELI has already begun implementing the LENA Grow program in select educational settings across Indiana. With the new grant, the initiative plans to expand to 300 more education providers over the next three years.
