The South Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS) Division of Early Care and Education has been awarded a three-year Preschool Development Renewal Grant. This grant will provide $8 million annually, totaling $24 million, to improve the state’s early care and education system.

DSS State Director Michael Leach expressed excitement about the grant. He stated that it enables the department to continue its vital work for children and families in South Carolina. “With this funding, we can continue to strengthen the support systems that empower families, equip our workforce, and ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive,” Leach said.

The three-year funding will be used to update the statewide comprehensive needs assessment of childcare. This assessment aims to enhance the quality and availability of early childhood education services for underserved children. Key areas of focus will include:

Evaluating compensation, benefits, and mental health needs of the childcare workforce

Supporting families in making decisions about early care and education

Providing mental and behavioral health services for children

Improving services for children with disabilities
