Peabody Preschool Aims to Reduce Age Requirement

Located at 9 Margin St., St. John’s Preschool Campus offers two programs: one for 3-year-olds and another for 4-year-olds. Currently, the preschool accepts children as young as 2 years and 9 months and up to 5 years and 11 months in a kindergarten transition classroom.

Principal Valerie Shippen and Early Childhood Coordinator Rosane Osmani presented their request to the committee for a letter of approval to the Department of Early Education and Care (EEC). Their goal is to add space for eight more students and hire two additional teachers by reducing the minimum age limit from 2 years and 9 months to 2 years.

Shippen explained that six families have asked for a program for 2-year-olds to help ease costs and improve convenience for families with multiple children. She noted a recent donation of a second-floor bathroom as evidence that the school is ready to accommodate more students.

“We feel much better able to meet the needs of younger children,” Shippen stated.

The school already has a designated room for students aged 2 to 2 years and 8 months.

Following the discussion, the committee voted unanimously to support the school’s request and provide the necessary approval.
