Labor’s Harmful Tax on Education Will Not Succeed

Confusion surrounds the Government’s plans to impose Value Added Tax (VAT) on independent school fees. Reports indicate that the Treasury is hesitant about the policy, which is set to take effect in January, right in the middle of the school year.

Officials have stated that the tax will be introduced “as soon as possible.” This statement prompted a response from Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, who maintained that the original timeline remains unchanged. She labeled any claims to the contrary as a “misunderstanding.”

What is clear is that this Government is poised to cause significant harm to the education of thousands of children. Moving forward with this policy, especially in January, is reckless.

Many small schools may be forced out of the market, particularly faith-based, family-run, and special schools across the country, which will struggle to remain operational.

Even teaching unions have called for a delay, citing fears of job losses and a “significant burden” on HM Revenue and Customs. They are demanding thorough assessments of how this policy will impact both their members and families facing sudden fee increases mid-term.

While the Government claims that the tax will fund an additional 6,500 teachers, the costs associated with accommodating thousands of children into the state sector are likely to negate any potential benefits.

The main concern regarding this policy is that it represents a harmful tax on education, threatening the future opportunities of many children. This move seems driven by a type of class envy that many believed had faded away years ago.
