Many babies and their parents leave hospitals with gifts like cute onesies or extra packs of diapers. However, at the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, families receive something special: the “Readiness Bag.” This bag is designed not only for physical needs but also for cognitive development.
The Readiness Bags are a result of collaboration among Harford County Public Schools, the Harford County Education Foundation, the Harford County Health Department, and the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health system. Each bag contains educational materials and early learning tools aimed at giving newborns an advantage in their education. The program aims to distribute 1,000 Readiness Bags each year.
“This project is very important to us because it focuses on nurturing the potential of every child from the start,” said Debora Merlock, president of the Harford County Education Foundation. “We’re excited to see how these resources will benefit our community.”
