CAMFED-Ghana has unveiled a new governance structure for its Parent Association (PA) and Parent Support Group (PSG) initiative, aimed at increasing community engagement in education, particularly for girls facing significant barriers to completing their schooling. This initiative is part of CAMFED’s 2024-2029 strategic plan, which seeks to enhance educational opportunities for young people and strengthen the connection between schools and homes.
The new governance initiative is designed to empower parents and community members to take an active role in their children’s education, creating a supportive environment that prioritizes the well-being of every child, especially those in rural areas. By collaborating with schools and local stakeholders, the program aims to provide a comprehensive, community-driven educational experience.
To kick off the initiative, a committee was inaugurated in Tamale. The committee includes three executives: Madam Memunatu Gaddo as Chairperson, Madam Prespera Estana as Secretary, and Mr. Yakubu Idu Issahaq as Organizer.
Clara Tigenoah, Head of Programmes at CAMFED Ghana, highlighted that the initiative focuses on empowering parents in rural areas to support young girls in accessing quality education. The program also aims to build stronger partnerships between parents, schools, and the community to achieve the best educational outcomes for girls.
“When communities are empowered, it supports the success of every child, especially girls who face the greatest challenges in completing their education,” Tigenoah said. She emphasized that the newly elected leaders will represent parents’ voices and strengthen the support system within CAMFED’s framework.
“Our ambitious goal is to help achieve the global Sustainable Development Goals by supporting millions more girls in rural Africa to complete secondary school, transition into secure livelihoods and leadership roles, and ultimately mentor the next generation,” Tigenoah added.
Mr. Martin Rex Kuunyem, Programmes Officer at CAMFED Ghana, reiterated the organization’s commitment to reaching five million girls over the next five years. He emphasized the need to provide educational support to combat school-based violence and improve educational outcomes.
Kuunyem urged parents and community members to support the committee’s efforts in implementing the program and building a brighter future for young girls in rural areas.
Chairperson Madam Memunatu Gaddo expressed her gratitude for the trust placed in her and her team. She promised to lead the program effectively and work towards its goals, calling on everyone to advocate for children’s education in a more organized and impactful manner.
