CAMBRIDGE — Hundreds of young children in Cambridge, Massachusetts, now have the chance to attend preschool entirely free of charge.
Over 750 Students Benefit
At King Open Public School, Cambridge public school teacher Vilmz Ortiz dedicates her time to nurturing young minds. She creates a supportive environment where children sing songs, read books, and explore subjects like science, math, and art.
“It’s the best job in the world,” Ortiz said. “We gather around, sing songs, read books, and do science, math, and art.”
Starting this year, children can enjoy all these activities at no cost.
“It’s a relief,” Ortiz noted. “Parents can send their children here for quality childcare and education, and they know their kids will be well-fed. As a parent myself, that’s what matters most.”
The new Cambridge preschool program is available to 4-year-olds and prioritized for financially qualifying 3-year-olds. About 40% of the participants come from low-income backgrounds. More than 750 students are enrolled in community preschool programs, Cambridge public school sites, and city-run preschools, all at no cost.
Closing the Achievement Gap
Ellen Semenoff, the assistant city manager for human services, emphasized the long-term benefits of high-quality early childhood education. “Children who have access to these programs benefit for their entire lives,” Semenoff said. The program was funded with $20 million in city tax dollars and strong support from officials like Semenoff. “We aim to close the achievement gap and give every child the start in life that we wish for our own children.”
Miss Jenny, whose grandchildren will begin preschool next year, described the program as a blessing. “As a grandparent, I see the strain parents face due to expensive childcare. Having this free program is a huge relief.”
Applications for the 2025-26 school year will begin on October 1.
