United Way of Androscoggin County is taking steps to ensure every child in the region is equipped for the first day of school through its annual backpack program.
This year, the organization distributed over 2,000 backpacks to schools across Androscoggin and Oxford counties.
According to United Way Executive Director Joleen Bedard, approximately 16% of children in these counties live in poverty. She highlighted that Lewiston has the highest rate of child poverty in the state.
“As adults, it’s our responsibility to support our kids,” Bedard said. “We need to encourage them, let them know they can succeed, and provide them with the tools they need to achieve their goals. Ensuring every child has what they need to pursue their dreams is essential.”
The backpacks provided through the program are filled with essential school supplies, including highlighters, pencils, and folders, to help students throughout the school year.
“When I deliver the backpacks to school administrators, their excitement is palpable,” Bedard said. “Hearing how the kids’ faces light up when they see their new backpacks brings me joy. It’s gratifying to know we’re making a difference.”
Bedard expressed deep gratitude for the community’s support, particularly the volunteers from sponsors who helped pack the bags. “This is what United Way strives for, and I’m thankful the city came together to make a positive impact on these kids,” she added.
