Kilcullen Childcare Centre has introduced a new bursary to support local students and learners pursuing careers in early childhood education. This initiative, valued at €2,000, aims to give back to a community that has continually supported the Centre’s efforts.
The bursary, named after Peggy Walker, the founder of the Naomh Bhride playgroup established in 1974, was unveiled during the Centre’s 50th anniversary celebrations held on Friday evening.
Peggy Walker was celebrated for her significant contributions to early education and childcare. Iseult O’Donoghue, a board member at Kilcullen Childcare Centre, highlighted Walker’s journey from founding Naomh Bhride to becoming the Director of Information with Early Childhood Ireland.
Niamh Headon, daughter of Peggy and Liam Walker, shared personal insights about her mother’s dedication. She recalled how Peggy left her civil service job after marriage, pursued Montessori teacher training, and established the playgroup at the request of Kilcullen’s then curate, Fr. Murphy. “Peggy set up the playgroup as a community service, not as a business,” Headon said. “That community-focused ethos has remained a core value of the playgroup.”
Headon also remembered her mother’s tireless efforts in promoting early education, traveling across Ireland to answer questions and advocate for children’s rights. She commended her father, Liam Walker, for his support and for helping to establish the bursary. “Peggy was a strong believer in education and balanced her work with ongoing studies,” Headon noted. “This bursary offers a fantastic opportunity for school leavers or anyone looking to change careers, continuing her legacy in early childhood education.”
Applications for the bursary are open until 5 p.m. on September 28, 2024. A committee will shortlist applicants for interviews.
