Ogiehgieh The Musical: Using Arts to Address Girl Child Education

by Beatrice

The importance of educating women and girls to reduce poverty is widely recognized. However, significant barriers such as violence, prohibitions, and disparities in STEM education persist globally.

Ogiehgieh The Musical, an original English-language production directed, written, and composed by award-winning artist Davidfnycountry Austine Ogbadu (“Pain,” “I’m in Love,” Ogwu The Musical”) and designed by Valentine Onogu (known for “What is Justice?”), collaborated with students from MSA to create a minimalist set and compelling character portrayals.

Produced by VO Studios, a rapidly rising film and theatre company, Ogiehgieh The Musical tackled the complex educational inequalities faced by Nigerian girls. Staged at Mustard Seed Academy on Airport Road, Abuja, Nigeria, the musical unfolds in Jattu, Edo State, following the story of Ogiehgieh, a sixteen-year-old girl courageously resisting being auctioned as a bride to an older man due to her passion for education.

The musical bravely addresses biases against girl children, touching on themes of education, trafficking, abuse, discrimination, gender-based violence, early marriage, female genital mutilation, and family dynamics.

With an engaging storyline and original songs, Ogiehgieh The Musical captures the essence of its setting with contemplative lyrics. It aims to elevate girls’ educational opportunities, highlighting the profound impact on their health, economic future, and community.
