New School Opens at Royal Children’s Hospital

The Royal Children’s Hospital has launched Yalingbu Yirramboi, a new school designed to support children and young people with chronic and acute health issues, ensuring they stay engaged in their education.

Funded by a $3.6 million investment from the Allan Labor Government, the school offers a comprehensive education program from Prep to Year 12 for hospital patients.

The school aims to help children and young people who spend extended periods in the hospital stay on track with their learning and reach their full potential. It is governed by a School Council and led by principal Naomi McBride, with an initial team of 22 registered teachers and 6 education support staff.

Students will benefit from individualized teaching and learning programs aligned with the Victorian Curriculum and VCE. These programs will be delivered through flexible teaching methods, including classroom sessions, small group sessions, and individual bedside support, tailored to each patient’s needs.

Yalingbu Yirramboi will also offer remote learning opportunities for students recovering at home but not yet well enough to return to school. When a child is ready, the school will support their transition back to their original school.

The school’s name, Yalingbu Yirramboi, means ‘Today and Tomorrow’ in the languages of the Boon Wurrung and Woi Wurrung peoples, symbolizing the continuity of health services to the community. Traditional owners were consulted to select this name.

This initiative aims to create a more consistent approach to operating hospital schools in Victoria, aligning it with other models like the Monash Children’s Hospital School.

Minister for Education Ben Carroll stated, “The opening of Yalingbu Yirramboi ensures that young patients receive the quality education they deserve, even while in hospital.”

Acting Minister for Health Ingrid Stitt added, “No child should miss out on education due to illness. We’re providing Victorian children with a world-class education, easing the burden on parents.”

Member for Northern Metropolitan Region Sheena Watt emphasized, “This new school ensures that young patients at the Royal Children’s Hospital have access to a world-class education in a world-class hospital.”
