Ensuring Underprivileged Children Receive Education

by Beatrice

In Kluang, an NGO is tackling the issue of underprivileged children dropping out of school by offering free tuition classes. Free Market Johor, led by coordinator Zaharah Raishan Mohd Yassin, launched this initiative four years ago and has supported around 80 children to date.

The programme operates in collaboration with a tuition centre in Kampung Gajah, providing tailored classes for children aged nine to 19. Donors are encouraged to ‘adopt a child’ by funding their monthly tuition fees, which range from RM75 to RM195 based on the number of classes attended. Each child’s subjects are selected according to their age and academic needs.

Zaharah emphasized the importance of regular attendance, stressing that commitment is key for children benefiting from the programme. Should a child miss classes without valid reason, their spot is allocated to another needy student.

The initiative targets various disadvantaged groups including those who have lost parents, the hardcore poor, and children from single-parent households. Many of these students also work part-time while attending school.

Beyond academic support, Free Market Johor organizes free markets periodically where essentials are distributed, and runs the Free Canteen programme providing hot meals to needy students in selected schools.

Zaharah hopes these efforts will inspire children to persevere in their studies despite challenges, fostering a belief that they are supported and valued by the community. She stressed that while the goal isn’t necessarily academic excellence, the programme aims to empower students to improve their educational outcomes and aspire towards a brighter future.
