The Floyd County School District introduced its latest educational initiative on Monday with the debut of the “Preschool Classroom on Wheels.” This mobile classroom, fashioned inside a bus, replicates a traditional preschool setup, featuring learning centers dedicated to play, science, math, arts, language arts, and more. Staffed by a teacher, assistant, and family advocate, the bus aims to familiarize children and their families with the school environment while delivering educational resources.
Superintendent Anna Shepherd emphasized the district’s commitment to preparing every child for success in education. With classroom space limited to approximately 300 students but a preschool-age population nearing 2,000, the mobile classroom serves as a vital outreach tool. It addresses the gap in early childhood education by imparting crucial school readiness skills to children who may not otherwise have access to formal preschool programs.
Chief Early Childhood Officer Kim Grubb highlighted the initiative’s goal of providing children with a school-like experience, enabling them to engage in learning and social activities alongside their peers outside of traditional school settings. The mobile classroom will visit various locations, such as parks, to engage with children from different schools, fostering excitement and learning opportunities in the community.
The district anticipates increased participation from families as they roll out the scheduled stops for the mobile classroom, aiming to extend its reach and impact within the community.
