Starting an Education Franchise I’m Passionate About

by Beatrice

Kevin Lee saw a problem in the U.S. education system: not enough teachers to give students the attention they need. He decided to act. In 2006, while still working as a property manager, Lee began franchising with Best in Class. Now, he owns two franchises and plans to open a third in 2015. Here’s what he has learned.

Name: Kevin Lee

Franchise Owned: Best in Class Education Center in Oakland and San Francisco, California

How long have you owned a franchise?

I’ve been franchising with Best in Class since 2006.

Why franchising?

I chose Best in Class after learning about the opportunities it offered. I was impressed with what the founder, Hao Lam, was doing and the support the franchise system provided.

What were you doing before you became a franchise owner?

Before becoming a franchisee, I studied math and physics at the University of California, Berkeley. I juggled classes, waitering, and a job at the post office, while also finding time to tutor. After earning my degree in mathematics and statistics, I worked in banking and continued tutoring on weekends.

Why did you choose this particular franchise?

I saw that public schools in America have a high student-to-teacher ratio. Best in Class addresses this by providing extra attention to students. I wanted to be part of a business that helps kids learn and improves the community.

How much did you spend before officially opening for business?

The franchise fee for Best in Class is $30,000, with total costs ranging from $60,000 to $100,000. For new markets, $10,000 of the start-up fee goes towards grand-opening marketing expenses.

Where did you get most of your advice/do most of your research?

After meeting Hao Lam, I was very interested in the opportunity. I did extensive research and valued being part of a system led by someone passionate about education and business.

What were the most unexpected challenges of opening your franchise?

Balancing my full-time job with franchise ownership was the biggest challenge. There were initial bumps, but we overcame them.

What advice do you have for individuals who want to own their own franchise?

Focus on your business, carefully select your team, and maintain strong communication between parents and students. Our business grew slowly at first but has since expanded significantly through word-of-mouth.

What’s next for you and your business?

We plan to open a third location in Pinole, California, in February, with a business partner.
